I loved Shadow Lines but this one is a masterpiece by Ghosh. For reasons I know not I have yet to pick it up again and finish it. I identify Amitav Ghosh with The Countdown, his only book I have completed.
This fantastic piece of yours has made him want to read him again. And going by your words I presume it will be a fantastic read.

"neither death nor birth was as fearsome a passage as this, neither being experienced in full consciousness" : This line has sky rocketed by expectations from the novel.Utpalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14926686851204547253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9390214.post-59953793295259738902008-06-28T12:10:00.000+05:302008-06-28T12:10:00.000+05:30Thats a very well written piece. The Shadow Lines still remains my fav, but his exploration of Burma & Sunderbans in his last two have been brilliant.

And as you recommend doing some background reading, for me, it works the other way round. The power of good fiction comes when I want to know more of the particular era after reading, to figure out the place's authenticity.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9390214.post-3845758972393020002008-06-24T22:10:00.000+05:302008-06-24T22:10:00.000+05:30Just thought of checking your blog ... People do not read works by historians but they read novels more.ayahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09925769902529863479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9390214.post-6493150217707999332008-06-23T11:39:00.000+05:302008-06-23T11:39:00.000+05:30Well, 2 posts in 1 day on Amitav Ghosh and his gen...Well, 2 posts in 1 day on Amitav Ghosh and his genius...think will pick him up again..and then come back..svetyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14334049900582397948noreply@blogger.com
